Hiya folks. I'm currently on Metformin. Have been for a few years now. It works for me that I take it a regular time - keeps me in the 6's (or lower!)

Trouble is, unless I eat at least - Something - (i.e. I have to have a small snack) when I take a tab, I can be very uncomfortable with tummy upsets and er.. stuff. Not much fun when you're trying to watch the waistline. Tried taking it with meals - but if I eat a full meal, blood sugars drop for a couple of hours or so - so not a good time to take metformin for me (I've had metformin hypo'sdoing that)

Is this unusual?

I didn't feel discriminated against till I went to lunch. In our staff restraut we have a stand selling health cover for quite a big discount.

Working on the assumption that if you don't ask you don't get I asked what is the cover for diabetics. the man pulled a face asked type 1 or type 2 and are you on medication. The expression on his face and tone in his voice told me all I needed to know.

It also isn't helped by my husbands osteoarthritis, but I know where I can get health cover if I want it and it's not from the British Under Pant Association! Perhaps I was swayed a little too much by the discount?

As somone how is injecting insulin 4 times a day, the prospect of taking insulin as a pill is a holy grail.

The good news - Whoohoo, Insulin in a pill!
The bad news - Testing the insulin pill will take a few years :(

In the 18 months or so since I was diagnosed I have heard a number of 'diabetic myths'. Perhaps we could share the ones we have heard, beliveable or not and see which ones realy are myths...

Three of the ones I have heard are (1) pickles and sauces are safe as they are savoury. I have taken to reading food labels and the vast majority contain at least some sugar, sweet pickle and tomato sauce are the worst culprits.(2) You can't eat any fruit at all as it is sweet and very sugary. Hmm, that one puts paid to the five a day thing with fruit and vege...(3)Baked beans are OK as they are a vegetable. This last one was from a dietician. I personally buy lower salt and sugar beans, but still have to watch out for the carbs too.

I think if we listened to all the myths, we'd be malnourished as well as diabetic!:dinner::dinner:

Hello to all! Actually I live in the Southern part of the USA and we say "Hey ya'll." I was just diagnosed 2 weeks ago with diabetes. A co-worker told me about this site and I joined after reading some of your comments of support and encouragement. I know I'm going to like it here!!!!

Diabetes is all in my family and my mother had a kidney transplant 8 years ago because of this disease. My mom, dad and dad's sister are diabetic as were my grandfather and great-grandmother. I've always known it was only a matter of time until I became diabetic but when I actually heard the words from my doctor I just cried. Hearing the words "You are Diabetic" was a major blow and I'm still having a hard time realizing that this is happening to me.

Luckily I have my Mom to help guide me and now I have ya'll!! I look forward to many, many discussions and I'm so glad that this site is here so we can all support each other even though we are literally oceans apart!

God Bless each of you!

Mary:rainbow:

I have found these new protein bars that are just wonderful. They are the protein bars from the SUZANNE line by Suzanne Somers. They are not like other protein bars that all seem to have a bad taste, they have a great flavor and texture. The cookies and cream bars taste just like Charleston Chews I ate when I was a kid and the chewy chocolate are wonderful if you are a chocolate lover. They have 14g of protein in a 40g bar and are low-glycemic. I just love them, you can buy them at SUZANNE.com.

They are also very low in carbs and calories as well,.
