Recently diagnosed with type 2. come from family of type 1 diabetics so most of this is not new to me. I am on 500mg. tablet metformin once a day and 20cc shot of lantus 24hr insulin. I am still learning what I can eat and what I can't and how much is too much. I would like to get off the metformin but right now that would mean an increase of injection. My problem is I can't get my numbers regulated. I can tell when I'm up because it effects my vision. It usually means I ate too much of something that I shouldn't have. Example for a mid afternoon snack I knew I was getting low so I had 1/2 a peanutbutter sandwich and an apple. Too much. Should have just had one or the other, but not both. Number went up to 262. My question is.... does anyone know of any way that I could have brought that number down without having to wait it out. At my last doctor appt. he told me that if I don't get my numbers under control he is going to consider switching insulins and maybe taking shots after eating.

Get a copy of a GI diet book. It gives you the GI rating for most foods. The higher the GI rating the more quickly the carbohydrate turns to sugar. You still have to be carefull. Biscuits, cake and chocolate are low GI because the fat content slows the absorption of sugar!

Also advice given to me was to keep active, which is sometimes easier said than done!

thanks, I have that book, just didn't spend enough time reading I guess. I'm starting to think my problem is something more. I tested myself before breaksfast this morning (9:30am) and was 107. Had 3/4 cup frosted flakes cereal with 1/2 cup 2% milk and 1/2 cup of orange juice. Tested myself 2 hours later (11:30) and I was 262. Tested myself at noon (only 1/2 hour later) and was 108. Seems like quite the drop in such a short time isn't it? Was active since right after breakfast cleaning the garage. I've always have had a bowl of cereal for breakfast and was always 150 or lower. I have just recently moved and my doctor is over 2 hours away so I am going to search for new doctor this week, one that specializes in diabetes.

Activity helps reduce sugar levels. It is something I need to be more of. Some cereals are better than others. I try to buy whole grain reduced suagar or sugar free cereals. Try also have less cereal and some fruit or nuts. I find it hard to control my sugar levels too as I like chocolate, cakes, biscuits and candies!

Good luck with the doctor too. I think I'll have to move to get a better doctor, one who can give me longer than 5 minutes to talk about everything I need to talk about in!

Exercise is a real problem for me - of the right sort I guess.

When I walk my dogs we do a 3.5 mile force march - it has a massive effect on my blood sugar levels.
I need to eat before the walk and use about half the normal insulin, otherwise I drop too low - not pleasant.

I am on metformin. At the moment I am doing a realy demanding job, so pump my sugars up before I start and test regulalry and if things look like falling too low get a quick sugar fix. I need to be more physical.

Also at the moment my central heating is not working, so I am having to be more active to keep warm. I do not reccomend being cold of you can avoid it, and my husband says the fingerless gloves and the bright purple socks in bed are something else!

i think we all worry about things. I try to be well informed, which helps. DOn't think my GP is so keen when I go in with information he hasn't seen...

Don't think my GP is so keen when I go in with information he hasn't seen...

Thats a real problem - medical teams often feel threatened by a patient who has tried to learn more. This is clearly wrong of them, but part of me understands why.
Most people are unable to recognize the difference between scientific 'fact' (or as close as we get) and highly plausible myths and this must be a real problem for them.

What the medical team fail to understand is that their track record on advice to diabetics is appalling. The diet we were told to follow 20-30 years ago, is pretty much the opposite of what they suggest now. Science moves on, and I am far more interested in studying diabetes than my GP is - why should I trust that he is more up to date than my research sources?

    Interesting view that Lankyman.

A valid point - that the patient is the real expert.

Yeah, I'd go with that. Particularly since a GP doesn't know, in the time available, the patient that well.

It'd be wrong to assume a patient is less well informed, less researched or less intelligent than the GP.
