It is an added bonus if you also have a job you enjoy

I spent 25 years working in a series of jobs that I hated without really knowing it - it wasn't till I changed profession that I really noticed.

I used to work in industry as a middle manager, suit and tie, 9 till 5 in theory, but more like 9 till 8 in practice most days - plus between 30mins and 90mins commuting.

I changed to work for myself, and now run a web design and marketing company with two friends - we have an office, and staff but I work mostly from home.

I have never been happier - managing my diabetes is a doddle, I spend all day with my dogs and work any hours I want (usually longer than my old job) - but, and this is the key thing, I enjoy every minute of it, so it is not like work at all.

I like the job I have, the down side is the commuting, and hour on a good day at least 2 on a bad day.

The job I am doing, I created within the firm I work for as no one else was doing anything else like it to stem the flow of lost books. As long as the work gets done on time, no one worries me unless it is for something else that is important. I get access to more areas of the building than most other people, and the areas I don't have access to (like lift motor rooms) it is for safety reasons.

    Basically brilliant job, crap commute!

Ah the joys of the underground. I live in East London (London, England...not SA) and I commute to college everyday to North West London. All is jolly apart from when I get to Tottenham Court Road to change onto the Northern line. I have to get the northbound trains to Edgware but they only come around every 10-15mins, most of the trains are to High Barnet! And when I do finally get on a train to Edgware it always terminates randomly a few stops before mine!

The Northern line is also known as The Misery Line. I use it from London Bridge to Kings Cross unless I am lucky enough to have an early start, then I take the bus from Charring Cross. Slightly longer, less crowded, nicer scenery (even in the dark), less stressfull:cheer:

FWIW, commuting in Manchester is probably as bad, if not worse, than London these days.

My partner has to commute back from Manchester in rush hour - its a 11 mile journey and takes her about 90minutes by bus or an hour of hell on two sardine trains.

    WHINGE WARNING

it is dark and wet here in London, the trains are ALL late and over crowded, the roads are hell, and I don't even want to talk about the underground!

Other than that it is a good day...

I didn't realise how lucky I was until reading all your gripes about travelling to and from work, I really am blessed to have such a short distance to travel to and from and in three months it will be even shorter with virtually no traffic at all, I'll even be able to go home for lunch every day if I so choose. I work for the government and they're trying to set up a one stop shop, i.e. having all the government departments in one place and we will even have a gym built for us, which is wonderful because I find it really difficult to exercise where I am now so we'll be able to work out and shower during lunch and I can't wait. I can't even walk where I live due to the mini busses (don't know if any of you know anything about our mini busses - they're lethal on the roads) and I live in a dead end so the only way out is on a road that is used most frequently by these busses that go way over the speed limit and have no regard for pedestrians, so a gym is going to be really great:bigsmile:

The one thing about traffic in Central London is most of the time there is too much for it to go too fast. I am told it is as slow now with motors as it was a hundred years ago when the motive power was yourself or a horse! Today I actually got an early start as someone else is doing childminding duties. A seat on the train is a luxury these days.

There was a recent edition of Top Gear where they tested travelling in London using foot and tube, bike, car, and foot and river.

    The car came last :)
