Hi Kimbo, things do become easier as time passes. Personally I have had quite a stress full 18 months, but have learned to deal with things. I personally find the best times to test are first thing in the morning and a couple of hours after my evening meal. As long as you don't over do things it is s till possible to have a treat too, and you learn when you are with in the right area.

Personally I find this site very supportive, and everyone is very friendly. The world is getting smaller and we are not alone.:rolling:

I think the 2-3 hours after a meal is particularly useful if you are injecting insulin.

The fast acting insulin that I use is designed to match the sugar curve of a normal meal, which peaks at around 90mins after eating and should return to 'close to' normal 3 hours after eating.

As I understand it, checking after an hour will show the sugar levels at their peak, checking after 3 hours at their 'normal' level.

It is still useful for non-insulin injectors, I guess, but for me it is crucial as 3-4 hours after a meal is when my blood sugar level is likely to be too low - don't want that to happen (again )

We are all here to help each other, Kimbo - good to have you on board

This site is awesome! I haven't really had anyone to sit and chat to and as CW said, everyone is so friendly. My friend's mom is a Type 1 but couldn't care less about what she eats or drinks. If she wants to sit down and have half a lemon meringue pie, then she will even if her sugar ends up being 32, she has already lost the function of her one kidney. I don't know how your testing works, but in South Africa the right level is between 4 - 7 so as you can see 32 is seriously looking for trouble. I panic when mine reaches 8.

I have joined our Diabetic Association and attend my first meeting on Saturday afternoon and I can't wait, I don't know why it's taken me so long to get involved.

Thank you so much for your kindness and support, it has meant so much to me, I couldn't wait to log on this morning to read more, it's so good to know that there are people out there willing to help. You guys are really great.

Hi Kimbo - the UK uses the same measurements as you do - mmol/l, but I think the US (and some other countries?) uses mg/dl.

There is a conversion table here: http://www.diabetesbuddies.com/?Page=mmol/l_to_mg/dl

My blood sugar can drift up to 14 shortly after a meal, but my fasting level is between 6 and 8.
32 mmol/l is scarily high (something like 550 mg/dl), and a type 1 is likely top be diabetic for many more years than a type 2 - hope she sees sense soon.

Well done on joining your local association - better late than never, and I am sure it will help keep you focussed on and on-track.
    Z.

Hi Zuggie, you have no idea what this site means to me, I have learnt so much in just two days, it's wonderful.

My fasting level is usually anything from 4.9 - 5.6 or so and usually keep it between 5 & 6.8 during the day, i.e. after meals. I'm very fussy what I eat. I find that when it reaches 4.6 and lower then I start feeling very shaky and light headed. It was once 3.6 which made me feel terrible. When I was first diagnosed I was terrified of eating, I was scared of everything that was put on my plate but that has improved a lot now that I know what is good and what is bad. The highest my sugar has ever been was 9.2 while taking cough syrup when I had bronchitis recently but I knew that would happen.

My friend's mom has been a Type 1 for many years and what she wants she eats or drinks, I don't know if she'll ever stop.

How is it possible to get diabetese without having absolutely no history in the entire family, mothers or fathers side?

We are all different, we have different needs. I aim to be between 6 and 7, although I do drift up to 8. If I go below 5.5 I start to feel ill, so above that is normal for me. It is a question of what you feel happy with.

My nana was a smoker, and used to smoke several packs a day. Her philosphy was always well you have to go sometime, so you may as well go happy. The main thing is you feel at ease with what you are doing while keeping healthy!

I am advised that here in the UK the level to be is btween 4 and 7, although I think that is pretty universal.
