In the 18 months or so since I was diagnosed I have heard a number of 'diabetic myths'. Perhaps we could share the ones we have heard, beliveable or not and see which ones realy are myths...

Three of the ones I have heard are (1) pickles and sauces are safe as they are savoury. I have taken to reading food labels and the vast majority contain at least some sugar, sweet pickle and tomato sauce are the worst culprits.(2) You can't eat any fruit at all as it is sweet and very sugary. Hmm, that one puts paid to the five a day thing with fruit and vege...(3)Baked beans are OK as they are a vegetable. This last one was from a dietician. I personally buy lower salt and sugar beans, but still have to watch out for the carbs too.

I think if we listened to all the myths, we'd be malnourished as well as diabetic!:dinner::dinner:

Your def right about baked beans. After yonks of trying to find a low fat, low salt, low sugar baked bean (I like my beans on toast)
I found good ol' fashioned Heinz or Branston beans were the lower than the 'Diet' alternatives. You really have to work hard
reading and comparing the labels tho.....

As for the fruit. Pffft. Love my fruit and veg. I'll take my chances. Grow my own where I can ;)

As far as I can see, a little of what you like now-and-again is fine - but it means a lot of finger stabbin' though

I know what you mean about finger stabbing. I am right handed, so if want to use finger on my right hand I have to enlist the help of someone else. Perforated fingers ooch...

I think the 'myth' that we need to 'avoid sugar' is quite dangerous.

Although it is true-ish, it hides that more important fact that we need to 'control' our intake of ALL carbohydrates

If people focus on avoiding 'sugar' they miss the fact that all carbs turn to sugar in your blood stream, its just that refined sugar does it a little quicker.
You can still eat sugar, just in small amounts and as part of a controlled carb intake.

I have some cookery books from Diabetes UK which use sugar in small ammounts. My family tell me I am miserable when I avoid everything I like, so now I ration it to more sensible portions...

I just completed a day long class on diabetes and I learned a LOT of things that I didn't know. The only foods I was told to stay away from were Sugared sodas and regular syrup as they will cause my bloodsugar to rise quickly and fall quickly. Counting Carbs was stressed so much in the class. If a class like this is available in the UK I highly recommend it! Ask your doctor to refer you. My insurance paid for it!!

I had the day at the hospital. They didn't tell me anything I didn't already know, and I have been doing a bit more research on my own. It can still be confusing at times.

At the begining of the week I went to an Eating for Energy session held at work. Although they talked about carbs, they stressed from whole grains and the like and the slow release carbs are better.
