Any one got any tips on how I can deal with a dose of cystitis? All the off the shelf stuff says it's not suitable for diabetics or people with high blood pressure, and it is several days before I ccan see the docs.

    Ouch.

The best self medication is to drink, drink, drink! Yeah, I know it's probably the last thing you feel you want to do, but it helps stop the underlying infection from getting worse. It sometimes helps to alkalise the output, so to speak, so adding a little bicarbonate of soda to a fizzy spring water might ease the discomfort.

More pleasant tasting perhaps, is Cranberry Juice, or the old-fashioned Barley water. Proper Barley Water - the sort you can sometimes get from a herbalist, not the supermarket stuff. Me, I'd go with with the Cranberry Juice, and lots of it - but watch out for that sugar content.

Thanks. this is a big help. As it is warm I have been drinking pleny of water diluted with cranberry juice.

Thanks for help. The cystitis seems to have cleared with plenty of fluid (mainly water and sone cranberry juice).

I have also been watching what I eat, and when I did the pin prick test lunch time my glucose was 5.9 and one of the rare occaisions I am below 6! Wont go for my coffee treat just yet as I don't want to aggrivate things again, so will make sugar free jelly for tea!

    Thinking about the barley water, I remembered I had seen a recipe for it somewhere. I found it in a book called We'll Eat Again;A collection of recpes from the war years selected by Margurite Patten & is as follows;
Wash 2 oz of barley and place in pan with 2 pints of cold water. Bring to the boil and simmer for 2 hours. Strain, add a little sugar and add the juice from sharp fruit such as rhubarb or red currants or lemon flavouring.

The recipe didn't specify how much sugar, but I expect something like candarel or splenda will work just as well. Hope it helps.:surprised::tongue:

My wife goes the cranberry juice route.

We always have loads of it in the cupboard - often a cranberry and pomegranate mix, as both are supposed to help.

Pomegranate is supposed to be good for us diabetics as well - so I get through a fair bit of it as well - and yes, you do need to watch the sugar content - some have added sugar and even those without added sugar have enough natural sugar to warant an 'in moderation' strategy.

Thanks - I had cystitis myself, a couple of years ago, and the cranberry route worked for me. Much better than I expected actually.
It's nice to see it works for others too.

I'm very much into natural/herbal remedies, mainly because, as I was undiagnosed as a type 2 until I had a number of little strokes,
and have to take half-a-ton of tablets every day, each with their own annoying side effects. I'm not into holistic though. Just
common herbs and stuff. Sometimes, y'know, it's daft but obvious. Swollen, itchy feet? Take your socks and shoes off for a bit.
Itching in the knicker area? Wear loose, natural fibres, like cotton. Or non at all for a little while :) If all you can get is supplement
pills, that's fine, but a nicely planned cooked meal is much more fun and tasty.....

    My 2p worth.

Trick is, in my opinion, is to think back a couple of hundred years - but not as a replacement to modern medicine , more to add
    a little self-help.

Thinking about the things available these days and peoples 'allergies', I try to think of complimentary remedies rather than alternative. In my family we have people who react to sea food, milk, prawns, peanuts, strawberries, aspirin and penacillin.

I have just made my own orange barley with real oranges and pearl barley-just don't cook it for too long as it absorbs a lot of water.
