Does anyone know whether coffee affects your diabetes?
I have noticed that if I drink coffee, a couple of hours later my blood sugar levels are significantly elevated.
I don't drink my coffee with milk or cream, so the carbs and calories are pretty low.
Does caffeine make your blood sugar levels high in and of itself?
I am not sure that there is scientific evidence to support the fact that coffee affects diabetes, but it might be possible.
It doesn't for me - I drink gallons of coffee and notice no 'surge' in blood sugar after drinking, but it could be that there is so much caffiene in my bloodstream that my body has compensated for it.
I reckon it depends on you own personal biology - there are so many factors in involved in diabetes, and coffee, being a stimulant, could affect you in lots of ways - even if all it does is increase your stress levels.
Coffee certainly seems to make my blood glucose levels rise a couple of hours after drinking.
Not all the time, but often enough for me to notice.

I suspect that is true in my case. I guess that my body starts producing adrenalin as the coffee takes effect. Its impossible to say for sure, but as long as you test repeatedly and adjust your regime to cope, you should be Ok.
I remember reading somewhere that coffee helps reduce the risk of developing diabetes - I'll see if I can find the report and get back to you.
I wonder if there's a link between coffee and stress. Coffee makin' peeps more ummm. hyper an'all.
Livin' the 'diabetic life' is stressful enough.
But that's the trouble tho' isn't it - you have to live a life, or hang around in some kind of pink nutrient tank with tubes in every orifice, blissfully dreaming of England, or now and again think - Sod That, - I'm having a Dow Egberts Columbian. And have a look at the results later and deal with it.
Or a nice 6"x4"x2" steak with a Guinness...... and a nice side salad ;) Don't forget the watercress and the cranberry juice.
Way I see it, everything is permissible, but not everything is advisable - make your own mind up - you'd be surprised what works for you.
Experiment.

I am CERTAIN 100% possitive coffee puts my sugar levels up. Well not the coffee exactly, more the sugar and whitener I put in it. It is a treat and just the odd cup unless my sugar levels are below 5, which for me is rare!
I think I have solved my coffee problem. It was driving me crazy not having coffee at all. I now limit myself to a maximum of two cups a day. The first one is when I get into work and before I start, I then get to work off any effects and I'm happy I didn't deprive myself!
and these are the effects of the second cup when I have it!
