Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum. Thought I'd give it a try as it is the only one of its kind I've found.

This year has been a bit of a roller coaster for me one way and another, so am also looking for some emotional and moral support.

I work for a medium sized company who organises annual health awareness events. I went along and had various tests done, and my blood glucose levels were quite high. They advised me to go to my GP with my page of test results. He confirmed I am diabetic.

While all this is happening a friend had a major road accident and two children were killed, my mum had an op for breast cancer, and we adopted a toddler.

Sorry if this seems a bit heavy, just needed to tell someone...

    Hi Caroline

wow - thats a whole bunch of 'shocks' in one blast.

I found out I was diabetic as a result of a work health check as well. At first I was angry and did the 'why me' thing.
After a few weeks of considering it carefully, and doing a little research, I changed my response to 'thank god they spotted it'

This damned diabetes thing can do real bad damage if you are not treating it, and there are loads of people out there who have it and don't know about it.

50 years ago, it was pretty much a death sentence - these days it is still a major health issue, but controllable and for the first time ever there is a cure on the horizon - it might take a few years to get there, but there is some very impressive research being done.

hi Caroline - welcome to the forum

Its never a good time to have diabetes, but in all of history now is the best time :)

Zuggie is pretty much on the nail - our job now is to manage our diabetes as well as we can so that we minimise any long term complications before the Docs come up with a cure.

    Hi Caroline

Sorry to hear about your bad news.

I agree totally with zuggie,i also went through the why me stage only a few weeks ago,and to a degree panicing over the loss of my beloved dohnuts/steaks etc etc, even after the short time that i have been diagnosed type 2
i have learnt to live without the dohnuts/steaks and indeed sugar, fats almost

i found this site by accident to be honest, soo glad i did,it helped me alot.

chin up,good luck and welcome to the forum

    regards steve

Thanks everyone. I found out at a realy bad time for me, just before Easter, and last year one way and another was not brilliant.

In the last year somethings have been easier to come to terms with than others. I had suspected diabetes for sometime, but my GP is not big on getting tests done, so the Health Awareness day at work enabled me to get loads of tests done with quick results, which I was then able to take to my GP.

I found this forum by accident, and I'm realy pleased I did.I'm not the only one who feels down about things, and there are people who understand how I feel. The fact that I am now able to share things is helping and I feel better already.:smile
