Hi, I'm Debbie from Texas
I'm 40 years old and was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in July '06. I found out I was diabetic while in the hospital having a major surgery. Shortly after my diagnosis, I started having high blood pressure problems. As of today, I'm having problems with my eyes, particularly my right eye is losing sight, and my blood sugars have started to spike up. I'm currently awaiting test results for my eyes and have to undergo additional testing. My doctor started me on another diabetic medication that I start taking tomorrow. They informed me that sometimes the body gets use to medications and therefore the medications stop working. I hope this isn't the case with me, as I truly don't want to become insuline dependent. I'm also experiencing weight problems and my doctors told me that the medications I'm taking are the cause. Has anyone else had any problems with weight gain or find it hard to lose weight? My doctors found blood and sugar in my urine for the first time today and says it's a result of my high blood sugars. My blood sugars have always been very good until recently. Has anyone else had this happen?
Thanks!
Debbie
Hi Debby - welcome to the forum.
Yes, some medications stop being effective after a certain time.
I know people who were on Gliclazide (Avandia, I think) for 6 or 7 years before it stopped working well enough.
One of the side effects of any treatment for diabetes is often weight gain - if you think about it, all that sugar that was in your blood stream is now getting used by your body - bound to have a knock on effect. Diet and exercise are always needed - not popular advice, but both will help your diabetes and general health. Guess we all struggle with those two, though.
I understand that Metformin, which is often prescribed along with other meds, helps with weight loss - so worth considering.
I am not on insulin myself, but I understand it is not as bad as many fear.
Sorry to hear about your eye problems, lets hope the tests give good results.
It sounds like you are in good hands.
Hi MaryKelly,
Nice to meet you. Thank you for your tips. I appreciate it very much. I do exercise, but it seems lately that hasn't been helping, but I will keep it up. I'm not on insulin yet, but my dad is insulin dependent, and I just fear I may be headed down that road, but hoping that isn't so.
