    Hi

There are many 'so-called' diabetic products that may help a little, but you still need to be careful.

Instead of worrying about whether something is advertised as OK for diabetics or not, you need to pay attention to the total carbohydrates consumed and the nature of the carbohydrates themselves - for example, complex carbs (like wholemeal granary flour, lentils etc) are better than refined carbs (like cane sugar, sweets etc).

There is some information on diabetic foods here: http://www.informationaboutdiabetes.com/diabetic_foods.htm.

If you can cook cakes and biscuits with, say, splenda, instead of sugar - thats great, and 'diabetic foods' are usually better than normal, but the difference may be small - always read the labels and compare the total carbs with those in the equivalent 'non-diabetic' foods.

You need to consider the total carbs involved and make sure that the totals fall within the diet advised by her medical team.

Also, if she is on insulin, you can possibly adjust the insulin to give a little leeway on the 'cakes and biscuits' front.

My Grandmother died at the age of 87 after being diabetic for the last 10 years of her life. She was still pretty sharp mentally, so, in consultation with her and her medical team, we made the decision to relax a little on the biscuits and cakes front - we all took the view that the rules for a 40 year old need to be more rigid than those for an 80 year old and 'quality of life' mattered more to her than an extra few months of life eating boring food.

Caveat: before acting on any advice given here, please consult with her medical team as her specific circumstances will obviously affect things greatly.

    Hope that helps.
    Good Luck.
