Welcome to Diabetes Buddies

Yeah - very worrying report.
As I understand it the 'thiazolidinediones' includes Avandia and Gliclazide - some of the most common meds for diabetics.
I stopped taking it over a year ago, opting for insulin instead. The gliclazide was not working well enough any more and I was needing to take larger and larger doses, which started to worry me a little.
I am more in control with the gliclizade and the metformin. I am supposed to take metformin with breakfast and evening meals. As breakfast tends to be small just as a kick start, I wait till lunch when I have a bigger meal. Gliclizade is OK with breakfast.
Six months on, I've gone from a six-pack to a 10-pack - and I don't mean beer. Despite spending a lot of time in a wheelchair, I weight-train a lot, and spend as much time on my feet as my annoying side will let me. But then again I've used the wheels for years. Mainly due to mini-strokes.
Daft thing is, I'm not big on eating, I don't have a hungry gene, and really careful what I eat. Hba1c always 5.5, Cholesterol 4.5 , kidney functions normal.
I'm advised by the nutritionist what I eat is prob. not quite enough, but otherwise good.
I'm on lots of anti-co-ags and Metformin three times a day. I'm told the anti-coagulants can't cause weight gain, and the weird thing is it's around the middle, and nowhere else. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is it the Metformin? I really wouldn't like to lose sight of my feet.
Try keeping a food diary, you'll have to be brutally honest with it too. keep a record where you are when you eat what you eat how you are feeling and what the weather is like. The weather has an affect on our mood which in turn has an effect on what we eat. After a couple of weeks a pattern will emerge. You can then go back to the nutritionist or doctor for a chat and sort things out.
For my part I nibble when I am bored or if I have been working in a cold basement I'll reach for the coffee and chocolate...
