Hiya folks. I'm currently on Metformin. Have been for a few years now. It works for me that I take it a regular time - keeps me in the 6's (or lower!)

Trouble is, unless I eat at least - Something - (i.e. I have to have a small snack) when I take a tab, I can be very uncomfortable with tummy upsets and er.. stuff. Not much fun when you're trying to watch the waistline. Tried taking it with meals - but if I eat a full meal, blood sugars drop for a couple of hours or so - so not a good time to take metformin for me (I've had metformin hypo'sdoing that)

    Is this unusual?

Most of you may already know but there is a new drug out for type 2 diabetics called Junuvia.I have heard good results from it.

    Hey "The Dray",
What you said is common for metformin, but good news they say it can help you lose weight.I also took metformin for awhile but I am a type 1 and it didn't seem to improve anything for me...nothing new there.
The upset stomach is one of the reasons they switched my dad to junuvia...of course the other was that metformin wasn't bringing his blood sugar down at all.The junuvia is also supposed to stop the hypo as well.
    Always,

As I understand it, Metformin works by helping you make better use of whatever insulin is there - unlike most of the other meds that try to kick your pancreas into producing more insulin. That would explain why it does nothing for some people I guess.

Hmmm - not heard of Junuvia - off to do some research.....

How does Metformin help a person lose weight? I've been on it for a year and nothing.

One of the reasons Metformin is often prescribed along with Gliclazide/Avandia, and even insulin, is that all of those tend to make you put on weight and Metformin supposedly helps to keep it in balance. So if you are on other meds as well, you may not notice a weight loss, rather NOT notice a weight gain.

I just started Januvia today. I'm currently taking 1000 mg. of Metformin daily, and my blood sugars have started spiking to over 200 no matter what I eat, so my doctor suggested starting me on Januvia. I've been taking metformin for almost a year, I was diagnosed in July '06, and I have noticed problems with not being able to lose weight. I exercise and diet and still am unable to lose weight.

Let us know how you get on with Januvia - I'm thinking of asking for that myself.

I'm on metformin and gliclizade. At first I had an upset tummy till I got used to the metformin. Now I have to be carefull what I eat. If I have anything sugary as an odd treat, I know about it for the rest of the day! I find it is an appetite killer, but I need to loose weight too...

As I posted in another thread, I am now on Xenical and also back on Metformin as well.

I never had any real problems with Metformin, but with Xenical, errrmm, how can I put this delicately.... you need to always be aware of how far away you are from the nearest toilet ;)

    Thankfully, I work from home.
