Welcome to Diabetes Buddies
|
Hi there,
I'm a type 2 diabetic, have nearly been for 2 years now. Have been on metformin before i fell pregnant, while i was expecting baby i was on insulin. Now im back on metformin, my diet has seemed to fall by the way side, i have more important things to think about now. Anyway, my blood sugar level is a bit high, i think its because im not excersing enough.
I love cooking, and trying out different recipies but its getting the time to make something fresh, and finding the time to do it.
I found this forum thru Sweet magazine.
Any suggestions??
Hi, and welcome
Biggest tip I can give you, as a type 2 myself, is that a little of what you like now and again will do you no
harm at all, as long as it's a little, unless you have clogged arteries, heart problems or have suffered a stroke
I've never been a big fan of sweet stuff, and if I want a Chinese, for instance, I'll cook it myself. I eat on the
principle that that if now and again I fancy a steak, for instance, I'd rather have a tiny high quality one than
non at all - I spent YEARS avoiding stuff like that, before I got fed up, and realised that my occasional 'cheating'
made no difference to my blood test results. My HBA1c% (uk) is a steady 5.8 mmol, cholesterol 5, kidney function
"better than normal" (whatever that means!)
Thoughts :-
I'm not overweight, but years ago started using Canderel in tea and coffee - I think at the back of my mind I was
worried about weight gain - but I've discovered recently that as far as the gut is concerned, which has 'sweetness
receptors' , using an artificial sweeteners triggers our systems to absorb glucose from our food the same as sugars.
Still, I'm hooked now :)
Can't remember where I read the article, but I'll post a link when I find it again.....
Exercise. Heh. I'm an early side of 50's male with two twenty-odd year old's and a 12 year old and a wife
10 years younger than me
If you've got a babs, you'll get that, whether you like it or not, so
it's SLEEP you'll be looking for (chuckle!)
Cooking? Go for it. I mentioned Chinese? I love cooking too. You can use fresh stuff, but the advantage
of smaller portions, and experimenting, is that you can marinate stuff if the fridge for awhile when you
have a minute, and do the actual cooking later - I love Mexican, Japanese and Chinese food because
it only takes a few minutes to cook, and its good fun.
Hello Dollysmate,
Welcome to the forum. As a mum I can understand all the issues round diet and eating properly. It is difficult. When my lad was a baby I used to make sure I had a break from things when he was asleep to sit and enjoy a cup of tea and read the paper or a book.
You like cooking, so that is a big start as you have control over what goes into the meals you prepare. Aim for a balanced diet with some treats.
How old is your baby? There are lots of things you could do and get some exercise. If baby is big enough you could try going swimming, most babies love the water and lots of public swimming pools have a pool for babies and young children with their parents these days. On nice days you could go to the park and have a stroll. There are also lots of good DVDs on the market with exercises you can do, and as baby grows up, will probably want to join in too.
Hi,
Thanks for that.
My Baby is now 6 months old.
i go swimming every sunday morning at the moment, and i have joined a local gym, until i got back to work in january. After that i dont think i will have time, but will try sometyhing at home, as well as the wii fit!!
Hi :)
My lot are all water babies - so whatever you do with them younger seems to pay off later.
But yeah, keep active, whatever you feel like. Determination brings results, from personal experience.
