Is it OK to eat the so-called 'diabetic chocolate'?

I have managed to give up most sweet things since being diagnosed diabetic, but chocolate is the one thing that I really have trouble ignoring.

I notice that many stores are now stocking diabetic chocolate - is this Ok to eat?
If not, what about the low carb sweets that are available for those on the Atkins diet?

    Yes and No !

Diabetic chocolate is often just a low or zero added sugar version of normal chocolate - this is not the same as low or zero carbohydrate.

You need to check the calories/carbohydrates on the 'diabetic' chocolate and compare it with the 'normal' chocolate to see the actual difference.

If you eat it as part of a controlled diet plan and ensure that you are aware of the actual carbohydrates consumed, then you should be OK.

The 'Low Carb' sweets may do less damage than the 'diabetic' products, as they are specifically targeting the carbohydrates instead of the sugar alone.

As always, read the label and make sure you know exactly how many carbs you are taking on board.

Yeah - guess that makes sense

Not the answer I was looking for though - what I really wanted to hear was "Yeah, its great - you can eat as much of it as you want"
.... glad I got the right answer tho

Yep - I could do with hearing that answer to a few similar questions.

Perhaps it might be worth starting a thread on which foods are 'Eat all you want' ...

...in fact I think I will

From the research I've done - I'm an underweight type 2... (scratches head)
Y'can eat what you want. Within reason.

Personally, I think diabetic products are crap (can I say that boss?)

Overpriced to say the least. That's the main problem with so-called diabetic products.

Diabetics can eat what they want with care....

Sadly, in my experience, you just have to put the work in
-e.g. Eat it. Wait an hour-or two. Check y'levels. (shrug)

I know the feeling Badger, I love chocolate, and it's so hard for me to give it up being diabetic, but I'm trying. I buy Russel Stovers and Dove sugar free chocolates, and when I get a chocolate craving, I eat a piece and it's really satisfying. I'm always careful to count the amount of carbs in the candy and include it in as my daily carbs for snacks. I recently bought some Dove dark chocolate with creamy chocolate centers, and they are so good.

    Hey Badger,
I just checked Dove's website and found the chocolate candy I was talking about. A serving is 5 pieces and is counted as 22 grams of carbs. I usually only eat 2 pieces at a time. I just count it as one of my snacks during the day. Hope this helps.

Thanks for that Deb - I've seen the Russel Stovers products in the supermaket - I'll give them a try.

Now, the next problem is how to stop myself eating the full pack :)
