Welcome to Diabetes Buddies
|
I have just discovered that at some shoe shops ( catalogs) you are entitled to buy certain types of shoes with out paying vat which can be a saving as good fitting shoes are a must if you have nerve damage to your feet as I have. I was diagnosed with diabeties 2 yrs ago and I am 76yrs old so trying to change a lifetime of cooking and eating different foods can be very frighening I try to be positive but buying certain shoes and also softtop sox is also very expensive. Just thought I would share this with whoever is listening Pauline:
I use Cosy Feet, but there are a number of places. At the moment I am pestering places like Boots and Superdrugs to see if as diabetics we can get VAT free foot care products.
I decided to try a couple of high street shoe shops. I went in specifically looking for diabetic friendly shoes and socks. The array of fancy foot wear I was offered was phenominal. Then when I found suitable footwear I asked for VAT relief. At this point I was shown the door, but if you don't ask you don't get. I will be writing to the head offices of each of the shoe shops with a few suggestions and ideas. I think I know what response I'll get. When I do I'll let you know...
Wowa thar girl.
Vat reduction is well on, and you shouldn't be refused it. Tain't their problem.
Couple of reasons why they shouldn't refuse a VAT. One is, if your a business customer, tho' to be fair to tho', you'd usually have a business account .
The other is that you have a disability. Not sure that diabetes itself is applicable, but complications like neuropathy should be.
Do you carry your free prescriptions card? Flashing that might help. Either way, it's no skin off their nose. Being a stroke survivor, I used a disability shop for my wheelchair, walking stick and 'helping hand', jar and tin openers, and all I had to do is give my name and address, and tick a box on the receipt saying VAT exempt. They told me the only risk I ran was that if I got it wrong, I'd get a bill for VAT from HM Gov. I Mean, Hey :) I didn't.
There's no reason for them to refuse. It isn't their problem - it's yours. Hope that helps.
I always carry it as I have found a couple of local pharmacies very helpful with things like cheaper and sometimes free cough medicine when I get a cold.
There are a number of things I think should be VAT free (like the things ladies use for personal hygine every month), but it is all money for government. Hmm, I think I shall turn the printer on and get out the quill pen...
Thank you for comments I sent for shoes from a catalogue Hotters and asked for vat relief and their reply was they do not make invalid shoes or words to that effect so this puts you off asking. However I did find some very nice sox on our market which are comfy and reasonably priced. Thanks again.
I work on the theory of if you don't ask you don't get, and if enough people ask we might just get. Because I have problems getting comfortable shoes that don't rub, I often have to go for the higher priced, better quality options, so less VAT is a consideration...
