Hi all. I don't have diabetes but my Mum does and I would like a bit of advice so that I can do what I can to be helpful without being annoying :)
My mum (in her sixties) has Type II. She is a large lady and suffers a bit from sores under her bosoms. Her doctor (who, from the sound of it, is even younger than me!) said that a better bra (to lift her enbonpoint away from her body) might help. As she is anything but flatchested she thought "...!!!!".
Has anyone experience of this? Can a better bra help with this without making the wearer want to cry when they see themselves in the mirror?

And in general, if anyone has any tips about what to do and not to do, please pass them on. She is very much in charge of her own life and can sniff out a nag at a quarter of a mile, but I'd like to help where I can.

    Thanks in advance,
    Maria

Hi Maria - welcome to the forum.

I am not an expert on the bras, as such, but it does make a certain amount of sense.

One of the problems that diabetics can suffer from is sores that don't heal properly - ususally in bodily extremeties like the feet.

The advice usually given is to wear footwear that has plenty of room and thus avoids chafing of any kind.

Applying this to your Mum's situation, suggests that her doctor may be on the right track.
Wherever there is chafing, there is the potential for sores and infection - removing the cause of the chafing makes good sense.

Where I can't help, (being a bloke), is with any experience of whether this solution would actually help in practice, or whether it might lead to the chafing being transfered to the bra straps for example.

    Hope that helps a little.

I don't know if this is the problem or not but diabetics are prone to yeast due to their blood sugar levels.Under the breast is a major area for that.If that is what is causing the sores you could try a 1 part water/1 part baking soda mix and rinse with it-then use a hair dryer to make sure the area gets completely dry.Need to do this daily until the area is cleared. The hair dryer is good practice for anyone well endowed.

Had a word with my lass, who isn't diabetic, but is ummm, quite well endowded, but has a similar problem, particularly during the summer months. She tells me that it's quite correct that a well fitting bra helps a lot. But they are expensive if you're big on top, and hard to get hold off, but aren't a total solution. She uses a 'Water Melon' body lotion from Avon.

Gents can get a similar problem in other area's - one of the inconveniences that diabetics have to go through is the Podiatrist :) (Gosh I hate anyone fiddlin' with my feet!) The solution is good support (sports socks) keepin' clean and E45 cream.

Same in the underpant area.... :shamed:

The ideal solution from my point of fiew are made to measure bras, but this is the real world, so M&S or BHS will have to do!

There are a number of specialist shops (a little more expensive) that offer a measuring service that helps you get the right size and style. A trip to one of these shops for me is a treat, and is worth the extra expense and effort for the comfort it affords!

As for the soreness, keep clean and dry. Personally any area that gets sore I use baby soap and powder on, and keep wipes and powder in my desk at work for during the day too.

I should have added a google search or telephone book will help you find the right shop. Not sure where you are, but I have found Contessa Shops helpfull. They are a little more expensive, but for the comfort, it is worth it!

Marks and Spencers used to do a bra measuring service, and for any one with child, so do Mothercare.
