My grandfather had diabetes and in fact died from it
I am 30 and lead a reasonably active life with a low fat diet (most of the time). But I am worried that I may be at risk myself, especially since my uncle on the same side as my family ad my grandfather. Any articles I can read on heredity of this sort of illness?
thnx
Minty
Hi Minty
There is a very strong genetic link with diabetes - my grandma, mother, uncle, aunt and brother have all been diagnosed diabetic as well.
The best bet is to make sure you are familiar with the symptoms and have regular checks from your late thirties onwards.
Hi, my father and one of my uncles are diabetic, although I'm not sure if anyone else in the family is. Make sure you know the symptoms, and if you think you may be, see the doctor. A healthy life style (including diet help). I only found out after attending a wellbeing/healthcare event at my work place. I'd been to the docotr with a number of symptoms (always thirsty, peeing a lot, always wanting to sleep, itchy in the knicker area, slow to heal wounds) at different times. I believe there are a number of commercially available tests, but it is good to keep in contact with health proffessionals too. It has taken me a while to work out what I need to be doing, but there are many things you can do to help yourself, and 18 months on from diagnosis, I am still discovering what I can and can't do!
