I'm 66 and have been diagnosed with diabetes type 2. My doctor has put me on metformin, and has threatened insulin if I can't keep it under control. I retired earlier this year and am not as active now. Doing some checking on the internet for the least invasive monitor, I ran across some "natural" remedies for diabetes and wonder if anyone has any experience or knowledge about them. One is a book of special recipes by a doctor Q, and another is herbal capsules. These purport to replace traditional medications for many. Anyone?

I have no knowledge of natural or herbal remedies, but would suggest you get something like a GI diet book, which lists the carbs in common foods as high medium and low.

Whole grains are generally better for us (whole grain rice, whole meal pasta etc...) Beware things like mars bars, yummy, low carb but full of fat and sugar.

Try www.diabetes.org.uk where you will find all kinds of things from dietry advice to travel advice. You will also be able to pick up things like diabetic cook books, although some of us adapt recipes form ordinary cook books to suit a diabetic diet.

Read through the other threads as there is lots of tried and tested advice, and you can always come back and ask more questions, we are here to help each other.

You could also try the local ibrary and the local sports centre for activities aimed at over 60's, and I know many retired people who go dancing and like to swim. Good luck, and keep in touch...

Someone has told me about a new healthy chocolate (xocai) which reduces dependency on insulin and because it is so high in anti-oxidants and flavenoids it is good for us in every way (including losing weight). The site for info is http://www.eatchocolategetthin.com

I am a chocolate fan, I will check this out later. It is a standing joke that choclate is a health food here in my office.

Have to admit to being a bit of a coward, ('nesh' we call it around here :) ) and though I've studied lots of alternative stuff,
I stick to my metformin, and heck, I know some that didn't and ended up on a metformin and insulin combo. Not nice.

I believe it may be possible to, if you're a type two, to control the diabetes by diet alone, AND excersise, but to do so means
almost making the diabetes a religion - and I'm not sure anyone would want to do that.

If you excersise less, eat less , but if you don't excersise, you run the risk of cardiovascular disease. Catch 22.

I'm a toddling wheel chair user, weight train, eat healthy (as CW describes) on Metfartin 3 times a day. Did my mmol record
today, and they were 6.3, 5.6, 5.5. Not bad, eh?

I must start keeping a food diary and better records, and get my self down to the docs for more pills. Also do more exercise...

I was shown a meter by a mate the other night, that he connected to his computer via a USB lead - basically, he was able
to keep track of his blood sugars by graphing it on his computer by transferring it from his meter to his computer. That
way he was able to track what-he-eats-to-blood-sugars.

Can't remember the meters name. I remember he got it from FreeCycle - basically, a site where you can pick stuff up
from washing machines to computers to furniture for swop or well, free. Better than in landfill. All you have to do
is pick it up. I mean hey, what more can you ask? Worth a Google if it saves a few quid?

I'll do a google as opposed to a googol which is a 1 with lots of zeros after it...

I like recycling, so yes it is worth a try.
