I tend to err on the side of keeping my carbohydrates low. Simply because I found it kept my mmol down.

Last week, after many years of avoiding them, one lunchtime I treated myself to a good old fashioned chip butty. Rubbish
chips, but that's another story... I enjoyed it, but, within half an hour, I couldn't keep my eyes open, and zonked out for
three hours during the day - I just couldn't keep awake. My lass was so worried she checked my mmol - - 6.1. Not bad.

Today, I had another one, out of pig-headedness, and boing! it happened again. When I checked my sugars they were 4.7.
Again, not bad. But being zonked is rather unwelcome.

Looks like there's some connection between the 'knockout' and the butties - Has anyone else come across this, is it normal,
and okidoke, it seems I could avoid the problem by avoiding all that carbohydrate, but if anyone has a solution.....?

    I take Metformin 500 mg x3, (8am, 3pm, 10pm)

    Cheers!

I have not long ago had a veggie berger and could sleep for England. I find I'm ok with some things and others zonk me out.

I try for the good carbs, but when it is hot in the middle of summer I can't face porridge...

What are good/bad carbs? A baked potato seems the worst for me - sugar goes to 500+

Good carbs are the slow release ones found in things like porridge. Many diabetic friends have been advised to avoid as far as possible potatoes boiled or baked and parsnips. If you must do chips, try oven chips, less fat and the fat affects the way the carbs are absorbed. A large plate of steak has virtually no carbs but lots of protein.

I have a GI die tbook which gives a good indication of the carbs in common foods, but beware things like chocolate, cakes and biscuits (especially sweet ones). They are low GI but loaded with fat and sugar.

It will take a while to sort out diets and things, but you will work out what works for you and then be able to add treats and not feel deprived. If you say you are never going to eat chocolate again that is the very thing you want, but if you have a couple of small bars and say this is my treat, it will help.

I think the carbs issue is one that affects all of us. When I got in from work I fancied bread and butter and marmite. After dinner all I could do was SLEEP, an I slept till 4am this morning!

There is a website that covers things GI if anyone wants to search for it. I think it is Australian, but I haven't visited for a while, so can't remember the web adress. If any one else knows of this site and the web adress, maybe they could post it here as a number of people have asked about carbs. in things and the number to have each day etc...
