I'd like to change where I get my diabetic care. It is almost non existent from my doctor, except for pills. As we are not moving, it is difficult to change doctors in my area. The diabetic day care centre at the hospital don't want to know unless my doctor reccomends it.
Any advice or ideas are welcome please...
That's puzzling. I can't put my hands on my Medical Card at the mo', but years ago I used to work for the Family Practitioner Committee, who send them out (they're probably called something else now).
Back then, you filled in the back of the card, and handed it in to the new GP, if they're accepting new patients, and they'd set up a temporary medical record at their surgery, and fill it in with details you provide until the origional arrives from the ex-Gp. That takes about 3-5 weeks.
I last changed GP about 5 years ago, and did exactly that. If you need to find out which GP's have spare places, phone the address on your Medical card and ask them.
Alternatively, go to reception at the Diabetic Clinic at the hospital, explaining exactly as you have above. They should be happy to take over - after all the funding for your care will be transferred to them !!
Sadly, tho' UK Gov goes on a lot about patient choice, I've yet to find a way of comparing GP performance figures, like schools.
I think they are still called the Family Practioner Cmmittee. My docotr has such a bad reputation that people are trying to leave in droves and other nearyby GPs are getting wise to it.
The hospital, I think I'll have to take a day off work and go up in person as they don't want to know over the phone.
I was reading a piecs in one of my magazines about diabetic care and Greenwich has the worst reputation for care, what care? It's no existent...
Good grief. That probably means the difference I know between my FP1's and FP5a's is still relevant
Seriously though, I guess I'm lucky having a GP practice that's uncomfortably straight talking and offers me more info and care than I would ever need, which is why I opted for GP care rather than the hospital. Works for my GP - he owns and flies his own private plane
He's very James Bond.
Sky diving, Practice away-day's, that sorta thing. Tough as nails though. Which I appreciate.
I found in my case the hospital was much better at stuff like lipid clinics, which I attended to keep an oar in. That might sound an odd comment, but putting my multiple stroke survivor hat on, rather than a diabetic, I found that where you get the best care in the NHS really depends on what needs fixing. It really is a "post-code-lottery".
I'm a little gobstruck actually. I would have thought down your way they would have fixed things there first. It's got me wondering whether these super-surgeries they're proposing might be a good idea... but I guess that's another thread.
I think medical care is very much a post code lottery. Greenwich as a whole is very poor at diabetic care. My mum and dad (dad the diabetic) get quite good care because they live on the border of the wealthy/posh area, while I live in a less affluent, more working class area. people in my bit of the boroug are nicer, medical care is not good (and here I am thinking of a whole list of four letter words and expletives to describe it).
