Had to follow up the kind of music you like with this one.
My favorite book, well there are a couple I return to on a regular (annually) basis. I am currently re reading The Lord of The Rings. I thought the films were rubbish, charecters in the wrong places, important events left out. The book is brilliant, I read for the first time in 1976 when the chap that is now my husband lent it to me. Apart from the book being a ripping good yarn, I enjoy the way Tolkein explored language.
I also come back to The Earthsea Trilogy by Ursula Le Guinne about every 18 months or so, and I have just bought The Narnia Chronicals as one volume. My good read for last year was The Black Magicians Triolgy by Trudi Canavan.
In case you hadn't noticed I am a fan of fantasy novels, and also like Terry Prachett.

Anything Forensic based as a rule - Jeff Deaver, Patricia Cornwall. Usually.
I have tons of older sci-fi like Philip K. Dick, Azimov, Clarke - been into that since I was a nipper. I re-read them sometimes. I even use the spare power of my PC to 'crunch' for SETI - Search For Extra Terrestrial Intelligence
Until recently I'd always considered myself a big fan of fact-woven-into-fiction novels. Arthur C. Clarke was a big financial contributor to SETI. Sad about his recent demise. Sigh.
Then one day one of my Bro's loaned me his entire Mr Pratchett's collection, and I've never looked back. I'm reading WinterSmith at the moment, but my chuckle muscles need a rest occasionally, particularly when I fall about laughing at 3 am, so I'm dipping into Julian Clarey's "Murder Most Fab" too...
Books are sacred in this home. They have a special something that technology can't provide. If I pick one of my older, well worn books, just the smell invokes special memories, and the more yellowed the pages the better. Someone gave me a little family bible with jottings and notes and dedications dated from 1823, and the feel of that delicate paper, and that wonderful musty smell - y'could just feel smell the history....
Dray, you'd love it where I work, I work in a library, and we have some very old books. I agree the smell is wonderfull. Much thoe I like using the computer, there is nothing like the feel of a book, and nothing quite like an old well read much loved and enjoyed book.
It is a standing joke amongst family and friends, my house has more books than the local ibrary. I also cary book marks in my bag and if I see anyone dog earing books or using post it notes to mark the pages, I hand them a book mark, show them my library ID and ask them not to damage precious books.
I probably would y'know.
Somehow, I feel that books will - and have to - endure. And I say that doing a couple of blogs. I've been on the net since - crikey! - 1972 - so I know it's transient, but a book - cared for, nurtured, stored-but-not-forgotten.... I think they have a life all of their own. Every book has the mind and the intent of the writer. I have a bit of a passion for them (yeh, I know, it sounds a bit weird) but if I go along a bookshelf, non-fiction or fiction and touch the spine of a book, I get the sense of the life behind the book. Does that make any sense?
You can't put the net in a box and store it for a thousand years. But you can a book. And it's contents won't change
I know exactly what you mean. Books are wonderful, and iti s great to live and work surounded by books.
People who only ever read the newspaper or the cooking instructions on their TV dinners will never appreciate the joy of a good book. Many ex friends have told me I should get rid of all my books. I have each one for a reason, and when ever family or friends children have needed home work help, it is always the person with the books they ask for help.
The internet is wonderfull and through it I have made friends with many people (like the community here), but I agree, it is not the same as reading a good book. One of my friends of many yyears standing has the internet and we email, but she still likes a nice letter too...
