Hi, and welcome Linedancer  Like the name - my lass does that twice a week and a lot around the house.
Makes Sniff The Cat dive for cover...

I'm a type 2 - managed to avoid insulin so far. The problem with your question is that it strays into the field
of medical diagnosis, and as far as I know no-one here is medically qualified. So the up-front answer is, you
really need to see a doctor.

From experience, there are lots of reasons why swelling can occur, a lot of them complications from diabetes,
so you need to get some investigations done why the swelling occurs. I suspect there's an excellent chance
the pins & needles & pain are a side affect of the swelling - but I guess you've worked that out yourself.

Reason you need to see a medic is that those pins and needles can also be a sign of diabetic neuropathy.
which can have quite serious consequences.

For a quick overview see here http://diabetes.niddk.nih.gov/dm/pubs/neuropathies/

In a nutshell, it's nerve damage caused by diabetes. Untreated, the eventual lack of feeling leads to unnoticed and untreated
damage which can lead to amputations. So you understand my concern about seeing a medical professional. It's horribly common.

And if you're into line dancing, magic! My lass (41) started it to lose weight (she's not diabetic) and it's working, and then some...

    Good luck :)

I'm not a medic, so don't take my word for it, I agree get things checked by GP or diabetes care team. My friend had carpal tunnel syndrome, which in her made the hands swell and gave pins and needlse. She needed medical help and a course physiotherapy to get over it.

definitely need to get it checked - it could be many things - I have had carpal tunnel issues in the past, and it certainly could be that, but it could also be diabetes related.
