Hi, My name is Jennifer. I recently was diagnosed with hypoglycemia. I am not a diabetic, however I need to follow a strict diabetic diet. Due to the fact that if I do not follow the diet, I will become a diabetic within two years. I have changed my diet but I am having difficulty with it. I am not suppose to go more then 3 hours without eating. What type of snacks are good? I've been eating fruits, yogurt, no sugar added rice pudding....
My biggest challenge is reading the nutritional labels. It it says 3% sugar is that still okay, or is that out too?
Breakfast is really important to me, and I was wondering what type of breakfast food is good?
Your input is greatly needed...
Hi Jennifer - welcome to the forum.
First, disclaimer: I'm not a doctor - nor do I play one on TV ;) - so please double check everything I say with your medical team.
With hypoglycemia, as I understand it, the problem is that your blood sugar is likely to drop too low.
I would imagine that the best foods to eat would be those with a low glycemic index - that means they release their sugar slowly into the blood stream. This would cause less of a 'high' after eating and less risk of a dangerous 'low' later on, and for this reason they are also the foods best suited to diabetics. If you search on Google for 'glycemic index' you should find loads of information on which foods are best, but the sort of foods that score well are yellow split peas, lentils, brown rice, barley etc.
Food labels are a minefield - 3% sugar doesn't really mean anything in isolation sadly as it depends on how many carbohydrates in total are in the product. All carbohydrates turn to sugar in your blood stream, its just that some do it faster than others - the target for both diabetics and sufferers from hypoglycemia is to eat foods that keep your blood sugar within healthy limits most of the time.
hope that helps
I found a book listing GI ratings for many foods helpfull, although the thing to remeber is fat slows down the absorption of sugar.
Talk to your medical /healthcare team too. Some people find visitng a nutritionist or dietician helpfull.
