i found out last sep that iam type 2 on metformin but since november i always seem to be unwell it is getting to me now do ant of you know of anything i can take to give me more energy
I'm on metformin 500mg 3 times a day.
Firstly - have you been back to your doctor for a check up - there could be other reasons than diabetes.
Are you mobile? Exercise helps.
Take a look at what you eat - don't keep carbohydrates out completely. Reduced, yep, but don't be tempted to a total protein diet.
Try adding slow release foods like brans and pulses to your diet.
Do you have a blood sugar meter? What kind of readings do you get, and when do you take your readings?
Does having a drink of lucazade help? - if it does, your metformin dosage may be too high.
I was diagnosed as type 2 in 2006 (before Easter), until last July, I was getting one cold or chest or ear infection after another. I kept going back to my GP, and had several lots of antibiotics, and then had another lot for a gum infection.
Since about the early part of July last year I have been OK. The metformin has an unfortunate effect on my tummy so I have to get to the loo fast sometimes.
I have a testing meter and try to keep things under control. I know LOTS of sugar and an extra dose of metformin has an adverse effect. I try to keep a tight reign on things.
Try to keep a diary and note how you are affected after certain foods and after your medication. I second keeping mobile. I feel better when I am up and doing (even if it is only dusting, it is activity), and talk to your doctor or diabetes care team if you can.
thank you for you input been to the doctor today got to go for some mre blood test on monday.iam the same as you C.W cold after cold ear infection after infection but ill have to see if like you it gets better with time...
ljw45, I hope you feel better soon. It is a rotten time. Things do get better thoe.
Do plenty of reasearch, try and keep busy which is not easy when you feel lousy. Try to keep to regular meals and take your medications. And if you are still getting one thing after another keep going back to your doctor. I have to go to mine several times before he takes me seriously.
One of the nice things about this forum is everyone is very supportive, and a couple of times when I have been having a bad day I come have a look at what's going on and feel better. At least I know I am not alone, even thoe our community is global.

How much does stress affect you? When I was feeling bloody awfull I'd been through quite a stress full period. I found out I was diabetic, my mum had an op for cancer and then my friend had an accident and two children died (one of her own children thrown from the car she was driving was killed), and social services got involved with the family. My husband and I said we'd adopt the baby as mum wasn't coping and all of the children were taken away, so we were under the watchfull eye of social services and had to be assesed by them and an independent social worker. The little boy has been with us a year now, but I also had to change my hours at work so that someone could drop the little lad off with the childminder and someone could pick him up. Things have settled a lot now, but I also recognise more easily when I am feeling stressed and take steps to calm down and relax more.
Actually this forum has helped a lot as there are a lot of sympathetic and supportive people here and we can all share our stories and experiences. It has helped me immensly.
hi Ljw,

There are many ways of dealing with the diabetes. Some work better than others, and what works for one doesn't always work for another. This forum helps as we are able to share ideas, and some doctors are more open and tolerant to new ideas than others.
It would be nice if there was a cure, but it is only in Sci Fi stories like Star Trek that cures have been found for many diseases and those diseases have been eradicated!
I am quite new to this, and find the whole thing sooooo confusing! I am also trying to lose weight, and thought I was doing well eating loads of fruit every day, until my doctor checked my blood, and told me that I shouldn't be eating so much fruit, as it all contains sugar! I have a heart condition, and have 10 stents in my arteries, so have to keep cholesterol down, so I cut out fats etc, and I have psoriasis, and have been told to cut down dairy, and acidic things like tomatoes!!!! I feel like I am going mad!! What on earth can I eat?? Everything I put in my mouth has some effect, and to be honest, I dont feel as if I'm getting enough guidance, it feels like I need to do a degree in diabetes, or nutrition, to be able to cope with it!!
Have you spoken to a nutritionist or a dietician? Or even your GP if he/she is of any help. In our house at the moment I have to loose weight and I'm diabetic, my husband has osteoarthritis and a dairy intolerance, my grown up son can't eat shellfish and the little boy we adopted is a VERY picky eater struggling to puy on weight.
As for the degree in diabetes, if you look through the discussions, there are details somethwere about an OU course somewhere.
